Hey!
You guys are great. I read through your comments and did take some notes...
But all in all, I have wayyyyyyyyyy too less time to craft, create, read, prepare all the things that I want.
I have a job. I have three kids...
I'm just getting started. SInce two years... :)
I think, I'm spending too much time with terrain building. I'm a craftsperson.
But I will get better in story telling and GMing. I'm at this point and that's OK.
Much, much space to grow and so many things to explore.
I'm curious. Is anybody here from Berlin?

Thanks for your inspirations.
Namaste
Stefan

There are actually 4 members from Berlin!
And I can totally relate. I have also three kids and a time-consuming profession.
It's all about how to make prep time short and worth it.
I'm doing a lot of world building and scene polishing and would never craft terrrain. Others prep villain backstories or random lists, some music libraries, pictures or maps. Every GM is different in this regard, I think. Funny how different we approach prepping though.

My great great great (maybe one more great) grandpappy on my mothers side was a german pastry baker who moved to Denmark and my fathers family has the family names würtz and bahne and they apparently had the dutch crown jewels in their posession back when there were pirates :) my granddad was asked if he wanted to participate in a legal thing about it. So there's german in me im sure :)

@JochenL didn't we have "Dark Mode" as a feature in our backlog? Seems like Bahne figured it out already. :D
We have styling in the back log and dark mode would just be one style.

@Rardian it's a chrome darkviewer plugin :)
Yes, I use this, too. Mine is called Dark Reader. But deactivate it during e-mail group messaging :)

Happy Birthday, Tamra!
Have you started your new campaign yet? I would love to read about it.
Hey Stephan, I have been giving it some thought. I enjoy using my old characters (who are legendary status), as key NPC's in my campaigns. (It worked well as my players had knowledge of these old PC's having played with them in the past). However, now I want to re-introduce them in a whole new light, as I will not have the same players as before, and they will not have any knowledge of them, except whatever lore I give them. I have a Dungeon in mind, am mapping it out as we speak. I also am trying to write a short story about my old adventures, so I can use it as lore for the next gen. When I have something more concrete I will absolutely share. Thank you for the birthday wishes. The big 50 was quiet this year, as it should be.

Hey, everyone!

My name is James and I've been GMing in one form or another for a little over 20 years. A friend of mine and I stumbled upon a copy of the 3E starter set at a Hastings the week it came out while looking for videos to rent. With no prior exposure to DnD and no idea it would change the course of our lives forever, we picked it up for a fun thing that night and the rest is history.

I hail from the middle of Missouri and these days I mostly play 5e DnD with a rotating cast of friends in anywhere from 1-3 different homebrew worlds, depending on which of us is DMing that week and what the group wants to do, as well as a stripped down version that I play with my 10 year old son and 5 year old daughter.

My personal favorite is my custom d2 that I made for a counter for a FLGS's Magic tournament one year. It's one of about a hundred custom sublimated ceramic poker chips with a mage on one side and a d20 on the other. Love it.

Welcome to our cast of GMs, James!
What‘s your angle on GMing, why did you join this forum and what are you hoping to find (answers/material/tips to), if I may ask?

Hello my name is Paul and I haven't GM'd in a long time though I am currently world building my own fantasy setting and want to get myself setup to reduce the administrative overhead of running a campaign.
Started actually playing with AD&D but migrated to MERP and finally to Rolemaster. Our group played regularly together throughout high school, college and our early careers. My favorite system for "stock" fantasy RPG is and will probably always be RMSS.
But as far as a targeted system, Ars Magica is hard to top.
My favorite die is the 2xd10 for d100. Specifically these speckled translucent white and gold pair that had a knack for rolling open ended whenever I *absolutely* needed them to.
Other RPG games I GMd were Star Wars (WEG, WEG 2ed, d20 and Saga)
Happy Birthday, Paul! I hope you have a blast of a day.
By the way, how is your progress of your own fantasy setting? Do you want to share some details?

Hi guys, my name is Tanja and I live in Stockholm, Sweden. I'm a writer who loves to create worlds where I can spend time and write. Over the years I've repeatedly turned to RPG sources for inspiration and now I want to take it a step further and see just how far I can push the game element in my creative process. My dream goal would be to basically have never-ending solo game sessions in my own worlds that I record as books. Will it work? No idea but it will be fun to try!

Spoiler alert: It works.
The wildly popular EXPANSE TV-series is the documented adventures of an RPG group.
Many folks suspect that FIREFLY TV-series was inspired by the Traveller RPG sessions Joss Whedon and Tim Minear played in school.
I watched my mom draft out a book using D&D ... only to shelve it when Stephen Donaldson's _The Wounded Land_ was published because that was basically what she was writing.
My own Amazon short story was published off of an RPG setting world I created.

Plus, as your own GM - with a group of GMs to bounce off of - you do retain the ability to surprise yourself.
Solo gaming is also great for this as you give up some of the predestination and control and let the story move in ways you don't over/pre-calculate.

So, yes, you can make it work and have the fun along the way.
I hope to see some of the trials and tribulations along the way.

Welcome to the fray. Keep your dice arm free.

So happy to hear that it works! :D

I love Firefly, it's been a while since I last watched it. Maybe it's time for a re-watch :D I haven't seen Expanse, will have to look it up.

Oh no, after all that work and just to shelve a project... so sad. I hope she's still writing.

Would love to take a look if you don't mind sharing your author name? :)

Hi my name is Andy and am from Boston, MA, USA. I’ve played D&D since I was a pre-teen but over the years have managed to be in only a few games. I GMed for over 15 yrs but only several times, finding it difficult to form a group for various reasons. I have run 2 successfully, a homebrew Forgotten Realms game in 3.5 and Tyranny of Dragons in 5E. My other games all fizzled early and I tend to bite off more than I can chew in picking epic-length adventure cycles. My favorite games are Mage the Ascension, D&D 3.5, Pathfinder, 13th Age and Fading Suns. My only significant experience is in D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder 1st Ed. 5E is not quite to my liking and 4E not at all, preferring both editions of Pathfinder and 13th Age.

My adventures have always lacked flair and creativity and am hoping to change that. My other hobbies are writing screenplays and fan fiction novels. At this point in my life, I feel I must improve my writing skills especially for adventures or else pick a new hobby other than RPGs, but have no idea what else to do for recreational human interaction.

I’d very much like to run a game finishing a story arc of significant length for Mage, 13th Age or Fading Suns over a few months before my adventuring days end. Groups seem to break apart much faster these days and gathering an in-person group seems very hard now, so I’m open to receiving tips about how to roundup a group for a few months. I’d rather not do an online game but more and more that seems to be the direction in which everyone’s going:(

My favorite die is d20 but feel d12 is a totally underused die.
Happy Birthday, Andy! I hope you had a great year.
Did you already find a group that is not breaking up so quickly? Just a thought, but maybe it is because those people are in a specific life cycle in which stability is difficult?

Yes she still writes and illustrates books and such - she was bummed out at the time but rebounded pretty quickly - she also really liked the Wounded Land and went on to follow that whole series.

I don't mind sharing the amazon info with a caveat: most of the world building I did isn't in the short story there.
Look up "Allen Murphey - Persistence"
My wife bought me tickets to the ApolloCon Writers Workshop one year - and you needed to submit a short story or a chapter from your current work for review.
In the backstory, three extrasolar survey missions had been lauched and I knew what I wanted for 2 of the 3 when they returned to our Sun.
But I didn't have anything good for the third ... and I started working that into the short story that ended up there.
It should be free to borrow or something - if its not - let me know and I can DM you the text or something.
There were a number of other experiments that went into that short story...
But most of the world-building was about developing what had happened to Earth and the Solar System while those surveys were away.
