Preview: Campaign Logger vNext (beta access)

Status
Not open for further replies.
Here's a video I made that shows some of the new stuff coming in vNext.

I also made this video to show beta testers the current state to help you navigate around.

I you choose to particpiate in the beta, the link is below and you can log into the beta using your normal Campaign Logger credentials.

We are looking for feedback. Please post your feedback in the thread below. Thanks!

Here's how to access the beta:

Addendum
Some corrections and additional notes:
  • Install App: Offline work is prepared, but not live at the moment. Currently, you just install it to start it directly from your app menu instead of browsing to the web site.
  • The Refresh button is not updating the app but just reloading data from the server - in case you have old data still in your local cache. This will be removed in the future and be an automated background task associated with the above offline feature.
  • Download/Upload: Campaign Entries are currently not included yet but will be in the future
  • Images: there will be an upload function in the future
  • Character Limits: Log Entry 2,500; Campaign Entry: 250,000
Use the New Generator Service
There's a slick new tool for building your custom generators.

Use it as a standalone tool, or to feed dynamic generators into your Campaign Logger vNext account.

Details here: https://campaign-community.com/index.php?threads/preview-generator-service-beta.682/

(Firefox) When using typing the beginning of an existing tag, then selecting it from the autocomplete list, it does not insert a space after the quotes.

Given a tag: @NPCharacter
Type: @NP
Select: @NPCharacter from the list

@"NPCharacter" (no space) is added
@"NPCharacter" (with space) would be better

This will make it consistent with what the production version does.
I am torn here. It was there before (like in the old version). I removed it as disliked it a lot. Maybe a setting?

I love how I can send selected entries for players to view in the rss link, but some tags that I would like my players to access are not appearing. Is there any way to manipulate the autogenerated list of tags? Below you can see it has excluded sessions 3 and 4.

Edit: my solution so far has been to create an entry that tags every session. That way they can click on their name, then a log with a session ID, then they can find a list of links:

Currently, only the first 40 most-used tags are listed in the tag cloud.
I would use an index entry, too, to add my own jumping-off point.

Could category preferences (e.g. color, whether symbols are used) be reflected in the rss feed? If I have color coded the tags I don't see a need for my players to see the symbols.

Additionally, I would love to be able to drag and drop entries to reorder them while filtering the entry list. Currently I can only do that when I am not filtering, but that is cumbersome and since the entries are broken up into multiple pages I can't usually move them as far as I would like. If you gave it an ordering variable halfway between the entry I move it past and the next-furthest entry it could work well.

Edit: how would this handle simultaneous users? I may want to invite my players to contribute notes during the session rather than simply viewing the RSS feed, but would like to make sure that wouldn't break anything.

Would making the ordering variable into an editable field help this? Currently, it is calculated in rather simple way.

Currently, the last edit wins. The previous versions are saved, too. But not provided in the UI. In the background, a revisions graph is being maintained but not yet used and analyzed. In the future you will see concurring edits and be able to consolidate them.

Editing the ordering variable manually would be a welcome improvement, but would still require thought and planning. Extending the drag and drop feature to filtered lists would be vastly more convenient.

Tags with punctuation

Hi! I noticed I had a "@Figboot S" tag in my tags

That came from a possessive:

Which I'm not wanting to be its own tag. "@Figboot 's" looks kind of weird. But I can live with that if breaking on punctuation isn't a desirable feature.

When looking to clean it up, the tag lookup wasn't finding it:

Yeah, this is a tough one. I think my expectation that whitespace is inserted is because we press tab to select the autocomplete. As a software dev, i press tab *a lot* and expect it to insert whitespace.

I think im just used to the production version (whitespace gets inserted). Its caught me off guard every time with the preview version. But the preview version does make it easier to write tags like @"NPC"s (without needing to press backspace).

A setting seems like a good compromise.

If there's a better place for bug reports, please lemme know.

(in Safari), in the log page, if my window is narrow enough that the tag count wraps, the contents of the menu can't be selected (the mouse motion going over the new space between the menu arrow and the menu dismisses the menu. Gif attached.
I adjusted the styling. The fix will be contained in the next update.

I had a situation where clicking on a tag didn't do anything. Other log entries, clicking that tag did change the filter, but one refused to do anything. (I caught a screen recording - https://vimeo.com/448320894/9881ee1d8d).

Clicking the orange reload button did fix stuff.

Is there anything I can capture before reloading if this happens in the future to make debugging easier?
Finally! Found and fixed. Will be in the next update.

Site updated...
...and a bug found: Global and Campaign Settings don't sync properly when switching between them.

(Safari) I had a hard time editing colors. At first I thought that the color picker wasn't working ("I choose something not-orange, but now I just see orange"). It looks like if any choice is made, the whole card is moved to the end. Trying to dial in a particular color for me frequently takes more than once click, so the card keeps shifting out from underneath me. (I can supply a video if there's platform issues going on). Also, it'd be nice to see the color in context to see if it's less or more readable than it was before.

Hi,

I tried to reproduce this bug, but it didn't happen to me.
I tested it with Safari Version 14.0 (15610.1.28.1.9, 15610) on macOS Catalina Version 10.15.7 (19H2).
The color pickers are showing up and change the colors according to my input.
Could you give me any hints how to reproduce the bug?

happens to me 100% of the time :-( . I'm on Safari not-14 (Version 13.1.1 (14609.2.9.1.3)) and one OS older (10.14.6 (18G5033))

Ok, might it be possible to check another browser like Chrome? Or update your Safari to version 13.1.2?
