Townscaper is more like a toy than a tool, and it's not out yet, even in early access. Still, it would be cool to use something like this with tabletop RPGs:
Build quaint island towns with curvy streets. Build small hamlets, soaring cathedrals, canal networks, or sky cities on stils. Block by block.

No goal. No real gameplay. Just plenty of building and plenty of beauty. That's it.

That is very cool! Thanks @ELF. I see you can click inside areas to change small parts too.

Interesting. By clicking on free spaces, you can drop a random downtown area with suburbs around it. You can do this several times to increase the size of the map. By clicking on a downtown area, you can divide the block with a street. Alas, I see no function to increase the density of a block or make buildings complexes bigger or reduce the number or streets or return to the former state. Also extremely random with not much of an influence on what is how created in that map.
In sum, I'm not sure how to use this for roleplaying. Any ideas?

As said, it is a toy. But also an effortless way to generate 3D projections of cityscapes. A bit simplistic, but fun.

I have been following Townscaper for awhile now. I've been contemplating running a campaign using a region built with the app.

It's a bit backwards to let your mapping tech dictate your campaign, but in this case it would be awesome to have the mapping theme for your Milieu via a great little app. And creative constraints spawn inspiration. :)

In the full version of Townscaper you can export the created .obj file and then use Threescaper to walk around your creation in 3D:

Still pretty pointless, but perhaps you could use some of the imagery as urban visualizations...
(Not that there wouldn't be other, more graphically impressive tools for that.)
