  • Title: Grenzland (Borderland) - A West Marches-style Game
  • System: Dungeon Fantasy
  • Setting: Sword and Sorcery (read more: English or German)
  • Story:
    • Base and Mission Campaign with changing players and characters
    • Depending on the mission chosen by the players, the optimal character complement will change
    • Sub-optimal party composition is part of the fun, though
  • Sessions:
    • Once a month up to once every week
      • Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday
      • From 7 pm CET (earliest) till midnight (at most) - about 3 hours in length (optimal)
      • German or English, please indicate your preference
    • On Discord using video chat and theater-of-the-mind
  • GM profile: JochenL
The upcoming Season One is my proof of concept. At this time, I want to invite German-speaking players, at least for the first few sessions. After testing and tweaking, I want to open this up to all English-speaking patrons comfortable with gaming in European time zones.

Sessions Summaries: https://logger-stream.campaign-logger.com/?rss=9d04bc90ab7d4c0a85f51d063cb83f61&mode=next

Fundamentals:
  • We do not try to complete one mission in one session
    • We want to keep missions as short as possible, though, but without hastening through sessions
  • We favor ROLE playing over ROLL playing
    • We like rolling dice in addition to interactive play, though
  • The GM will prepare only a few scenes and leave freedom for interaction between player characters
  • Missions are selected and organized by players, and then prepared by the GM
    • Player-organized also includes finding a suitable date and time
House Rules:
Q&A:
  • What about character creation? You are free to create your character on your own, following the rules. If you don't have the rules (yet), I can provide you a pre-generated character. If you feel uncomfortable creating a character on your own, I will gladly help you. Let's find a date and time so I can guide you through the process.
  • Where can we talk in character to prepare for our next mission? Please use the associated Borderland - Dancing Cauldron thread for this.
  • How does scheduling a game session actually work? You say when you want to play and what you want to do. When you are at least 3 players (and at max 5), and I am available as a GM, we will have an appointment! So when some else suggests a time and a mission, chime in early to reserve your seat and/or discuss alternative times/missions, so we come to an appointment soon. Please give me at least a week of preparation for that game! That said, I will surely suggest a date and time (but no mission) now and then. Especially to get new players started or to kick things off.
  • When are you available then? I am usually available to GM from Tuesday to Friday, starting at 7 pm CET until midnight. I prefer to keep the length of game sessions to about three hours, give or take half an hour.
  • I am an English-speaking gamer; when can I partake? Create a character, and take part in the in-character discussions immediately! Please give me one or two starting sessions to sort things out. Then I will open up the table to all interested players.
  • I am not exactly European time zone compatible, but interested in your game; is there a chance...? Create a character, and take part in the in-character discussions! You will also be able to follow along with the adventures as they will be made public due to a West Marches-style game's nature. If you can gather a group of like-minded players during a time I can manage, I will try to get a game up for you once in a while.
  • My English is not good enough to game by! I can only offer games in German and English. Please add whether you would prefer an English or German game and whether you can or cannot do it in one of the other languages. That way, players know when to join or not.

Summary of Session 1:

Yesterday our heroes left Holt-Lindeck to investigate a potential plague spreading from Auheim, the mining town near the Silver Peaks.

On the first day, sunshine and friendly peasants made for a welcome change from town life. Through the night, they felt being watched, though. In the morning, they discovered the hiding place of someone nearby. The heroes were quick to decide that a single orc had been watching them as part of a weird coming-of-age ritual.

Drizzling rain, heavy clouds, and low mood ruled most of the second day. Still, the group was quick to defend itself when desperate-looking ambushers attacked from the undergrowth. Holy Light, a killing fire lance, and commanding shouts were enough to send the eight surviving attackers back into the woods. A short examination of the one dead body revealed colorless and thin blood, comparable to Frundir Samtstein's.

Only a few hours later, close to sunset, they arrived at Old-Auheim's limits. The once idyllic northern part of this Halfling village had all access routes barricaded with carts and sharpened wood stakes.

The adventurers decided not to return to Holt-Lindeck and press on instead.

Summary of Session 2:

Behind the barricades, the adventurers met Hrgungdvar and Foxrouge who are adventurers themselves, and came to the aid of the suffering population of Old-Auheim. In the Black Bear Inn, Odilon Fußtreu, Constable of Old-Auheim's northern part Norbruck, told them of roaming bands Bleachlings as well as fugitives from Auheim camping south of the river. He believed that they fled from vampires but brought some of these creatures with them - better keep running water between us!

In Sutbruck, the derelict southern part of Old-Auheim, our heroes learned of strange happenings in Auheim. They met Snilkiss Samtstein, brother of the deceased Frundir Samtstein and leader of the refugees. They heard of shaking ground, rumbling earth, black snow, vampiric stalkers in the night, and other foreboding rumors.

On they pressed, marching through the night, fending off leathery creatures descending on them from the dark sky. And finally, well after midnight, they reached Auheim, a town seemingly lying in ruins with pyres burning at several places. Small creatures were burning large ones.

When they decided to end this, they confronted the doomchildren feeding the pyres, but suddenly a loud rumbling and shaking, the earth cracking open and lava welling up, interrupted the fight. In the center of town, a huge demon burst out of the ground.

Summary of Session 3:

Our heroes shortly discussed their options and decided that they could not turn their back on Auheim. The young Foxrouge vanished during the discussion and the remaining adventurers shortly wondered if her decision wasn't the right or at least the more clever one.

Eremis Gladis and Hrgungdvar in the front, and Benedikt Von Falkenstayn and Nichuan in the back, they confronted the Pit Master that ascended from the bursting earth. Through disctraction, holy wrath, and focused magic, they destroyed the monstrosity and its doomchildren, freeing Auheim from the immediate threat.

Soon thereafter, they discovered Evil emanating from the lava tube that birthed the demon. While the townsfolk welcomed their saviours, the adventurers prepared their descend into the pit to bring an end to this source of Evil. Down there, an orb of black metal was displayed on a pillar of cooled lava. After attempts of magical analysis and began excorcisms, they concluded that removing the orb was the correct way of treating this danger.

Aboveground, the citizens had prepared to burn their former leader Merwild Dusk Of Amber, supposed to have become a vamipre, and his blood-drained love Matilde - just in case the rising sun would not do this for them. The heroes intervened, questioned them and the leader of the mob. They learned of the background of the Bleaching Plague, the tainted silver, a shrine of Hehl deep in the mountain, and of the purification process that sheds silver from Thaumarium and Abyssium.

After ordering the mines shut, freeing Merwild from accuses, and taking care of personal business, the adventurers took the silver for Holt-Lindeck and ventured home to tell their story...

Summary of Session 4:

On a gray, rainy morning, the adventures left #Holt-Lindeck through the #Harbor Gate and headed north-west for the #Twilight Forest. The first night was dry and quite comfortable under a large tree at the forest's fringe.

Our heroes wandered through the mostly silent forest the following three days without encountering neither men nor monsters.

In the late morning on %23.05.1021 NL, they finally reached the #Lonely Tower, standing on a clearing of vivid green grass and shining like polished ivory in the sun. As they studied the tower and clearing, shadowy forms flew in their direction and drained their very life force when they came in touch with them. Thankfully, a magic wind could destroy these creatures. But upon stepping unto the grass, the heroes noticed the starving properties of hunger grass. To prevent unnecessary contact with the grass, they threw up a grapnel and bound the other end of the rope to a tree.

At the top of the tower, they found a raised platform and three daggers beside it. Obviously, one should fit the daggers onto engravings on the platform. Doing so, mighty magic teleported the adventurers into the center of a circular room...

At the top of the tower, they found a raised platform and three daggers beside it. Obviously, one should fit the daggers onto engravings on the platform. Doing so, mighty magic teleported the adventurers into the center of a circular room...

Summary of Session 5:

The walls of the circular room were translucent and allowed the heroes to see outside onto the clearing surrounding the tower. The ground floor was filled with high bookshelves, a neat sitting area with comfortable leather armchairs and smoking paraphernalia, a studying area with a lectern, parchment, ink, feathers, and a strongbox. A black portal on the outside wall leading to "somewhere."

The first few moves of the party triggered a rain of daggers. More cautious now, they discovered more traps, valuable tomes of lore and magic, potions, scrolls, and another portal behind an illusionary bookshelf.

The first portal transported @Bausum to the outside, so he had to climb back onto the tower and trigger the dagger riddle on top.

The second portal transported @Jacob von Falkenstayn into the next level - a living and sleeping chamber on the second floor. A Rakshasa was awaiting the group, and just as he tried to greet Jacob, the thief fled back through the portal and into the library.

Feeling unprepared and the portals now only leading to the outside, the heroes plundered the library and headed back to #Holt-Lindeck.

Summary of Session 6:

The heroes left #Holt-Lindeck for #Auheim to delve into the mines and seal the Temple of @Hehl.

On %08.06.1021 NL, they reached #Old-Auheim, which is now called #Bruckheim and home of halflings, humans, and gnomes alike.

On %09.06.1021 NL, they reached #Auheim and prepared for the mission starting on the next day.

On %10.06.1021 NL, they entered the mine and discovered Dwarven wonders on the first few steps. Following the mine cart tracks, they reached a great hall where the light of their torches and spells never reached neither ceiling nor opposite wall. After taking on additional equipment and examining the corpse of a huge insect, they followed one wall and left the great cavern for a smaller tunnel leading to a rope ride lift used by the silver-mining gnomes of today. Pony carcasses and insectoid tracks and marks invoked visions of grizzly breeding behavior.

Several hundred yards further down, behind fissures, cave-ins, and attacking Kikimora hatchlings, they finally reached the entrance to the Temple of @Hehl. High above a river of molten stone, a broken bridge led to an open stone portal. Flanked by pillars depicting myriad ways of torturing dwarves in hell, the yawning gate waited for the heroes to enter.

Summary of Session 7: Meanwhile...

%14.06.1021 NL

Having heard of the misfortune of his family's former subjects, @Arthur von Falkenstayn traveled northwest to a farm at the fringes of #Twilight Forest.

On %15.06.1021 NL, he reached the general area and found it strangely deserted, the winter wheat unusually ripe and unharvested. Seemingly overnight, the dirt road he followed had mature trees growing on it.

When he walked on the farm, @Illandor and @Foxrouge joined him after they had observed and shadowed him for a while. In the barn, they discovered dead animals. In the living quarters, they found a zombified child. In the fields, one scarecrow turned out to be the farmer's mutilated and barely alive body.

In the cellar and under the upper crust of the fields, strange amounts of vermin crawled.

Two other scarecrows suddenly moved. One was slain, and one escaped. They discovered a bald, white-skinned, vampire-like creature with razor-sharp teeth.

Following the tracks of the escaped scarecrow and some horses, they reached the outskirts of a forest village hours later. They disturbed a child that was gathering poisonous mushrooms and thereby gave away the moment of surprise.

Summary of Session 8:

%10.06.1021 NL

Before the gates to the Temple of @Hehl, the heroes decided their strategy and prepared to storm the courtyard behind. Three doomchildren, six hellhounds, and three gnome-like creatures harassed by the demons awaited them. Although @Nichuan got wounded, she glued two-third of the enemies in place to stop their advance. The other three killed one each, and then the hellhounds triggered a chain reaction, exploding doomchildren and shredding bystanders.

The three dark gray-skinned gnomes were very thankful for their rescue. As the power of @Solus could not heal them, the inquisitors accompanying @Benedikt von Falkenstayn insisted on killing them, too. @Eremis Gladis protected them and sent the gnomes home.

Following the motives on the walls: dwarves flayed to their bones, the next gate led into a large hall. Columns decorated with gold and engraved with Old Dwarven runes lit up with an inner glow and reflected their light from gold encrusted bones and skulls neatly stacked from floor to ceiling between walls and columns. Here and there, beautifully crafted weapons were held by protruding skeletal hands.

It was eerily silent until someone disturbed the bones, and skeletons formed and attacked the intruders. @Hrgungdvar had been wounded within a second and needed to retreat while @Benedikt von Falkenstayn kept the undead at bay brandishing his holy symbol.

Summary of Session 9:

%10.06.1021 NL

Back in the #Temple of Hehl, the skeletons formed two groups, one withdrawing into the darkness to the north, the other to a dried-up pool in the south. Cornered by the power of @Benedikt von Falkenstayn, the fighters easily slew the pool skeletons. Two dwarven ghosts at the pool invited @Eremis Gladis to a spirited drink and told him about the drunken king and his dark brother leading them to @Hehl.

Suddenly the northern skeletons rushed in and were transformed from undead into demons by fireballs shooting from the darkness. Two emaciated women, seemingly skeletons but in reality death angels, came forward brandishing toxic serpent staffs and poisoning @Eremis Gladis.

After destroying skeletons, flaming bones, and death angels, the heroes entered the northern darkness and discovered the unholy altar of @Hehl. Sacrificed hell gnomes were lying around - guts and gore all over the stone slab. All under a great sphere of Abyssium from which blood was dripping until it was shattered by @Hrgungdvar.

The blood was running to the east and gathered in a basin. An image of a greater demon appeared, warning the heroes of going any farther. @Benedikt von Falkenstayn picked up a holy symbol of @Solus used as a catalyst to transform the blood. The image disappeared.

While @Hrgungdvar exorcised the altar, @Benedikt von Falkenstayn cleansed the basin, draining the blood now transformed into water. After collecting their newfound riches. The group closed the temple, and together the priest and holy warriors sealed it shut using the might of @Solus and @Perra.

A short foray into the upper levels of the mine, the #King's Seat, showed that they are now the home of dwarven ghosts insisting on the living to leave.

Back in #Auheim, the Bleachlings have recovered - no sign of the illness left. But the mad inquisitor sent to root evil in the town has vanished.

On the way home, @Benedikt von Falkenstayn gathered followers that flocked to his word and wonders, wanting to learn from him.

On %14.06.1021 NL, they were back in #Holt-Lindeck.

Summary of Session 10:

%20.07.1021 NL

@Willert Moosball, magistrate of #Holt-Lindeck, sent a messenger, @Darris Hopfentreu to the newly found ^Guild of Adventurers, the ^Borderland Explorers. He awaited specialists in the #Harbor District to aid a murder investigation. @Hrgungdvar and @Hogar answered his call.

In a well-known (at least to @Hogar) warehouse, a dockhand with a "pried-open" chest lay in a pentagram. Under his body, a closed eye surrounded by chains - an old, now-forgotten symbol of @Hehl - had been drawn in blood.

After asking passersby and getting a name, @Jarvis, watchmen rounded up his friend @Erik for questioning. He pointed them toward @Amelia, the new girlfriend of @Jarvis. She could be recognized by a closed eye tattooed into her left palm. She lived somewhere in the run-down #Castle District.

There they met a drunkard sitting under an eye painted on a wall. @Miron told them that this is the punishing eye of @Perra and that her temple is nearby. The feeding the poor was drawing near, and he invited them to come with him.

They were greeted with "What Perra annoys - the Eye enjoys!" and are led before a perverted statue of the goddess. Her different insignia lit up depending on who was standing in front of her. The priest took notes on what was glowing.

@Hrgungdvar and @Hogar no longer wanted to play along in this comedy, and when they saw @Amelia, they took action.

They slew two acolytes and the vampire that was @Amelia. The high priest @Aphron Periast confronted them, and as he was about to be defeated, five ^Kikimora young burst from his chest.

They closed down the temple and reported their findings to @Willert Moosball to take further measures.

%28.07.1021 NL

Together with @Darris Hopfentreu, who wants to become an adventurer and the two hands tending to the horses and wagon, @Gerrit and @Jarea, the group left #Holt-Lindeck for the #Lonely Tower.

The march was taxing as the weather has been hot for days now. But, gladly, they could take turns riding the wagon instead of hiking.

In the evening of %31.07.1021 NL, they reached the clearing of the tower. It was eerily silent down there. And in the night, large cats, lions or tigers, circled their camp.

On the morning of %01.08.1021 NL, they discovered insectoid tracks and spider silk webbing in the woods, forming a maze between the little creek and the inner clearing of the Hunger Grass.

@Nichuan's overpowered fireball set the webs aflame, sizzling tiger spiders and trees alike. Still living, but burning spiders came forth, angry and determined to kill the group. Sadly, they had no chance.

Another swing of mighty magics extinguished the flames on a path to the inner clearing, and the heroes continued to investigate the changed surroundings of the tower.

They found a dead orc and damage bronze pentagram buried at the perimeter of the clearing and surrounding it.

Summary of Session 12: Meanwhile...

%15.06.1021 NL

The fleeing child alerted the villagers, who fled into their huts and rang a large triangle. Shortly after, a harpy rose from the central place and circled the area in search of intruders. @Foxrouge's magic covered the three with vines and foliage so that they weren't discovered.

Eventually, the group decided to near the village. @Arthur von Falkenstayn went openly, and @Illandor and @Foxrouge followed ducked behind the wall of wheat covering the large clearing. The village was lying under the trees to the northeast of that clearing.

A ghastly beautiful woman, @Penelope, was speaking for the people. She called the harpy their pet and assured the explorers that they just wanted to live in peace. In the meantime, @Illandor sneaked up to one of the houses and discovered normal people held prisoners in the cellar, or as they explained, "living food" for the current occupants.

As the harpy returned, @Foxrouge shot at her, and @Illandor went against the man-eaters. The village's women grouped against them and threatened to overrun the adventurers. The druid roused the horses in time so their stamped could disperse the attackers.

From the wounded, the three learned that they wouldn't stand a chance against the @Meat-Monger who led the armies of the @Deathless One, the eternal son of @Jadwiga Noga who prophecized his nearing return. Nevertheless, they decided to stand and fight.

After the real villagers were sent back to civilization using carts and horses, the heroes prepared the central place of the village with powerful magic and worldly traps. And when the men of the ^Corpse-Eaters came back to town around midnight, they struck them with lightning, perfectly targeted arrows, and ax and shield.

In the final battle, they slew the @Meat-Monger, a kind of unholy warrior.

On %17.06.1021 NL, they were back in #Holt-Lindeck.
