D&D5E Character Creator

Dear all,

One of my players recently suggested that he will run a new D&D 5E campaign starting next month. We had a short brainstorming on what to play and I decided that I would like to play a cleric this time. Now I am still experienced with D&D 3.5 and may have assumptions about 5E that are wrong, but I looked at several D&D 5E character creators online, and although I found a list of domains, all character creators that I found only gave the option for "life" as a 1st level domain.

So here are my questions:
  1. How do I create a burglar trickster cleric (what do I need to keep in mind)?
  2. Do you know of good character creators (without the necessity to pay)?
  3. Do you know of a basic pdf collection online or database to look up the basic rules for D&D 5E?
Thank you very much in advance.

Did you check D&D Beyond?
AFAIK, you can have a handful of characters for free.
For basic rules, D&D Beyond should also have you covered.

I think the Trickery domain would work well for this character, but it looks like the Life domain is the only free domain available in the SRD which is why it was the only domain included. There are several websites out there that have all of the content released for 5e, but they're not exactly legal, and I'm not sure any of them have a character creator. You may need to manually create a character sheet if you want non-SRD content.

If you stick to the SRD, probably a cleric with a rogue multiclass would probably work, focusing on Dexterity and Wisdom. The Thief Rogue archetype is also included in the SRD, but you'd need 3 rogue levels to get the thief features.

As far as the basic rules, I believe this is what Wizards includes in their starter set.

This is a pretty good overview too.

Thank you very much, you two. I did check D&D Beyond, Jochen. That is why I wondered why "life" is the only option available. I will need to read about the other domains and maybe even pay for them in D&D Beyond. Let's see.

If you're open to buying content, I think the only book you would need is the Player's Handbook. It has the Trickery domain and most of the standard races in it.

Also, something to keep in mind. I've never bought anything from D&D Beyond but I believe if you do buy it through them, you can ONLY access it from them. You do not get a physical copy. However, it is also possible to buy individual items (scroll down the page).

I'm not sure how much this helps, but FastCharacter.com allows you to select also other cleric domains. The end result contains page references to the relevant rule books.

Thank you!
A player of mine suggested this page: <link removed as the linked site ignores copyright laws>
Especially for digital rule books: <link removed as the linked site ignores copyright laws>
And for character creation: https://aurorabuilder.com/
Just wanted to let you know.

I would stick with the content of the System Reference Documents to avoid any possible "strikes" - especially in the U.S. with their new untested copyright committee.
