A Crew of Misfits
%15.05.2245, #Tycho Station, #New Horizons Zone, #EASThe new, company-issued e-board displayed the same personnel file portraits for half an hour now - six images, including his own. Staring won't help it. These people would be his new crew, and he better got to learn about them.
Department Chief @Gunter Hatting, 34, his chief engineer, a tech-nerd, self-taught as it seemed. He had an impressive service record with regular commendations and promotions. A minor career bend only after he served as an investigator for internal audit. Did he peeve the wrong person? He had an aircraft piloting license, him being from Earth and a tech - where did that stem from? Was he a better-off?
The second engineer, Ex-Captain @Amiaz Reynolds, a military spacer. Loader-licensed, Vacc-qualified Combatant. Straight promotions, no commendations, no admonishments. Only 26 and a captain without distinguishments? Reynolds... Wasn't that executive that signed his new assignment a Reynolds, too? Family-ties? A rich kid from Earth touring space on his ship. Thank you.
Fourth Officer @Marianne Rousseau, 28, cargo master. She recently transferred from a subsidiary. Disciplinary demotion due to smuggling of illegal goods. A cargo master doing a little side business, OK, but getting caught? He'll better have an eye on her. Hobbies: Gardening? On a starship? Good grace, she was from an Earth backwater, top-scoring IQ, no formal education, Loader-licensed, Vacc-qualified. Let's see.
Android @Aaron, 28. His longest-serving crew member. Former survey scout, bridge duty-qualified. Injured and patched, with a recent forced personality upgrade. No copy of his former employer's service record.
Prole @Aria. A prole. Three years old, nearly used up. His steward. He looked down at his empty cup...
Being a captain had its privileges, though. The commanders' lounge's Italian espresso was superb. He thanked the waiter who served him a new cup.
Now his record, as if he didn't know already... First Officer @Jamie O'Toole, 32. That should have read "Captain O'Toole". Pilot, Navigator, Broker. It was about time for his own command.
What a crew of misfits: a better-off tech nerd with inquisitive tendencies, a spoiled kid with gun expertise, a high IQ school system dropout with a criminal record, an android with edited memory, and an old prole.
