Welcome @Akodoken!

Ah yes, Basic D&D. I was going to start an OD&D campaign last year but got distracted by shiny objects.

Welcome @Jack S. I started GMing 5E with Phandelver too! That campaign is now 5 years old and still going. Hard to believe how fast time goes.

I like the coin d2 idea! Yoink.

Hello all.
I'm Gustavo, I live in Argentina, South America. I've been roleplaying for almost two decades and started GMing around 18 years ago.
My game group has a high amount of GMs, so we take turns to run adventures and campaigns. Usually one of us is running something and when he's not able to do it, somebody else volunteers to run a single adventure, or if the reason the campaign is put on hold is something health related or a new job, somebody else starts a different campaign.

In my group I'm the one that loves to learn new systems and play with them. Lately I was able to GM a Fate Core campaign, and then a single session PBTA adventure. And I'm not the weirdest. We have another GM who's developing a new game system and we help by testing as we play. Nowdays we are running games by Jitsi meet, because there's something called Covid 19 out there.

Hi all.

Lots of grognards here, it seems, very nice.

My name is Hannu and I am a Runequest/Mythras GM. I've been GM'ing since 77? started with Basic D&D (I think the original box) and continued with AD&D. In Feb 81 we played our first RQ session and have been doing that ever since with a brief interlude of HeroWars and Call of Cthulhu (Horror on the Orient Express and part of Masks). We have played with original RQ2, RQ3, Mongoose RQ the final version and now RQ6/Mythras since 2011.

We are playing the world of Glorantha and have managed to keep several of the original players in the campaign with some new additions - playing with a group of 3-6 players per session.

I have a blog on the tools etc for RQ/Mythras campaigns in notesfrompavis.wordpress.com and interactive tools in tools.notesfrompavis.com. Have been contributing to the Mythras Encounter Generator http://skoll.xyz/mythras_eg/ a bit.

Have been using campaign logger for some years now (22 March 2017->) and find it very useful.

Welcome @Gedece! What PTBA game did you run? I've had fantastic fun playing Blades in the Dark. Band of Blades left me kind of meh. I've got Apocalypse World 2 on my bucket list.

@Hannu who are you calling very nice? :p

Have you played much D&D? I ask because if you have, I'd like your thoughts on the "feel" and experience of RQ/Mythras gameplay versus D&D.

I've been playing so many other games in the last few years, that I'm now seeing D&D as a particular type of experience, but am having a hard time putting it into words. I'm trying to describe the game like how I'd describe Monopoly versus Catan versus Scythe. But I'm too close to D&D still to see the forest.

Well we played 2-3 times a week in 1977-1980 October :) - is that a lot :) We were at school or students so no restrictions on time slots.

It is quite a long time ago. I remember being hesitant on trying RQ because it seemed more complex.Well, it was not.Playing with RQ mechanisms vs D&D felt much more realistic tactically. No longer 200 gnolls vs the 10th level fighter with 18/00 and multiple attacks plus nice sword and lots of armour holding the other front while the 9th level magic user cremates the other front with his fireball :) Well, we were young and very early in our rpg careers...

D&D and its variants were lots of fun but gathering the experience points by the early mechanisms of killing opposition and gathering gold pieces did not fulfil the emerging needs of the players and the GM any more, most if not all of the commercial material we had available at the time were dungeons.

The cults with their relationships and goals, interacting with society, outside world instead of dungeons, the Gloranthan feeling of having a complete mystical world, realistic feeling cinematic battles and if player character died it was much easier for him/her to roll a new one and be productive member of the party than it was in D&D of the time. With Mythras which is the RQ rules refined and polished the tactics are much more important and rarely does the fight go to last hit point as the tactical nuances of special effects will cause a cinematic feeling end much earlier. Never have I had such a terrific feel of cliffhanger "movie" like combat than I have had with Mythras many many times.

We have not missed D&D and I surely would not go back as I have too much on my hands with the current gaming world BUT we have not tried any generations of D&D since the Advanced Edition - that is more than three decades ago and I see there is LOADS of exciting material that has been produced for campaigns and scenarios.

So I cannot compare the D&D of the current generation and current campaign packs and scenarios as I have not played them, either as a player nor as a GM.

You can have wonderful campaigns and adventures with any rule system - I have played Basic D&D, Advanced D&D (the first version), Original D&D, Call of Cthulhu, MERP, Hawkmoon, RQ of many varieties, HeroWars (Chaosium/Issaries), Boot Hill and 10 Candles - at least. With all of them with the exception of Boot Hill of the late 70s/early 80s and perhaps MERP we had loads of fun. Having played RQ, CoC the most - there are the most memorable moments from those, 10 Candles was also pretty memorable. Your Journey Will Vary...

Hola. I'm Alex from Perth, Australia. I was first introduced to D&D in the late 80's but then life quickly separated me from it until a few years ago when 5e was coming out. Enjoy Johnn's material and 5 Room Dungeons - CL is the next step.

Hello everyone!

I'm Jason from Orange County, California, USA. I've been playing RPGs since 1980 when I came across three friends playing AD&D during lunchtime at school and was invited to join. I started DMing AD&D shortly after that with some other friends. Over the years since then I have played and GMed more games and systems than I care to name (though there's probably just as many I never got the chance to play as well). Some of my favorites were 2e & 3e D&D, 1e Pathfinder, 5e HERO System, 4e Shadowrun, and various editions of Gamma World and Traveller.

I'm currently GMing a playtest of an upcoming RPG (under an NDA, so I can't talk about it... but I will say it's a ton of fun and I'm really looking forward to the final product) and I'm overdue for finishing a Pathfinder Xcrawl campaign that I put on hiatus a year and a half ago (due to GM burnout and family issues). I recently discovered Campaign Logger and it's making planning and logging of our playtest so much easier and more enjoyable (and it's a lot easier to compile all of my playtest notes to send to the publisher!).

My favorite die? Probably the d10. I like how versatile it is: roll one for a 1-10 or 0-9 result, roll two for a 1-100 or 0-99 result, or roll a handful and tally hits/successes for games with d10-based dice pools (like Storyteller).

Welcome @Zedwimer!

I remember Gamma World. I played that around 1986? Got attacked by muties. Good times. :)

I'm reading Deadlands #1 right now, actually. Perfect for Gamma World inspiration.

Hi everyone, I'm Patrick, I've been playing and GMing since the 80s, I was much younger then and had a much fuller head of hair.

My favorite dice has to be a bag od caltrops, many D4's. I've been a big fan of Johnn and his musings for quite a while. I'm currently running a mostly pathfinder homebrewed campaign, but have used many different game systems over the years. Im currently makling a new campaign using the Old School Essentials setting recently put out by Necrotic Gnome. THAC0 FTW!

Hey @BurntToast! Welcome!

Good old THAC0. That really helped my math skills growing up. Now that I'm old, I should probably use THAC0 to keep those skills, lol.

Hi everyone.

My name is Remy Monsen, born in 1976 and hails from Bergen, Norway.

Came a bit late to roleplaying, didn't really discover it until I was an adult, so I started playing in the early nineties. My entire group started then, so we were all novices. For some reason, I ended up being the GM for the group, which is the role I still have today. All the original members of the group have since been replaced, but I kept being the GM. We started back then with AD&D 2nd edition which was the hype those days. And we still play AD&D 2nd edition, the entire group seems to agree that this is the best choice. We do play other games every now and then too of course, always love to try out a new system (often with somebody else GMing it to give me a break), but our main game have always been 2nd ed.

I really like to play all kinds of games, fantasy, modern, sci-fi, dark and gritty, or light with fluffy unicorns. For me, the rules system is as much of the importance if I like a game as the setting itself. For example, I've played Warhammer 40K by using the Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader rules and loved it, while playing with the Wrath & Glory rules I hated it.

I've always had a special interest for maps, both historical real-world maps and fantasy maps. First thing you'll see when you step into my house is a large woven tapestry with a medieval world map. I am not much of an actual artist myself, so I need software that makes things easy for me. I remember back in the old days, when I was younger and read Dragon Magazine, there was always these ads for Campaign Cartographer by ProFantasy that looked so great, and I kept wishing I could afford the software as it looked so much greater than anything I could produce by hand or in my painting program on my computer (DeluxePaint IV). Today, I am a moderator in the ProFantasy community forums, you'll see me a lot over there if you visit. I also write some of the user documentation for them, such as the product manual.

For anyone interested in free maps, I also operate a site at atlas.monsen.cc containing a community atlas, a collaborative world. All the maps for this world is made in Campaign Cartographer by various people from the community, but for those not owning the product, all maps can also be downloaded in high-quality png format. It's over 400 maps there now. Feel free to use the maps individually, or if you want to, use the world as your new campaign setting. It is a great starting point if you want to provide the lore yourself, but don't feel like drawing all the map.

Hey guys, my name is Björn, and I'm from Berlin, Germany, but currently living in Lower Saxony (still Germany).

I started roleplaying in '89 after I found a solo adventure of DSA (The Dark Eye) lying around in my cousin's home. He explained to me briefly what it was about, and I was enthralled immediately. I have played and GMed RPGs ever since.
We played lot's of DSA back then (and still do), but also AD&D and later Shadowrun. Besides DSA I have GMed D&D (3.5, 5e), Shadowrun, Fate, to name a few.

There's no specific die I like the most. That's one of the reasons I always liked Earthdawn where you have to roll all of them! :D

Hey all!
I'm Jessica; from Portland, OR, USA
I've been running games on/off for 10 years
I've been GMing D&D 5E mostly, but dabbling into Genesys lately.
I like d10s the most from D&D-esque games, but I've been falling in love with the Genesys narrative dice too
Just in the last 6 months, my sporadic ideas, musings, readings over the years seem to finally be coming together into a coherent homebrew setting with tailored house rules

Welcome @Anul_the_Grey! Genesys is on my bucket list to play someday. I hear great things about the narrative aspects of that game.

Congrats on your homebrew!
