Obligatory hello message...
I'm David from the UK, getting older but not growing up. My older brother got me into D&D with his old 78(?) blue cover edition and I soon picked up the classic Red Box and never looked back. I've played most versions, skipped 4th to go to Pathfinder, and bounced back to 5th a couple of years ago. I've been trying to branch into other games now, preferring story and narrative over crunch. I've run a couple of short Fate campaigns which I really like as a system, a tiny bit of Paranoia, and my PDF collection has maybe too many games now I would like to run. Enjoyed some one sheet one shots recently which are a lot of fun. My Star Trek Adventures Borg Cube has sadly yet to venture forth for a game.

Currently running two 5E groups through my own home brew world, one group is learners getting the hang of things and my usual Wednesday group recently celebrated 2 years for the campaign (partly created with a couple of games of Microscope to flesh things out and include them), a great landmark.

I'm also a long time follower of Roleplaying Tips and Johnn, I have an email from the old newsletter dated 2003 so it's from before then...

Looking forward to increasing my GM wisdom score some more.

I don't have a favourite dice, they all have a tendancy to roll badly when I DM, much to the relief of the players. I obviously need to buy some more.

I'm Chris from Scotland, been playing DnD since 3rd edition.

Recently started Horde of the Dragon Queen with my regular group - they are somewhat squeamish going in as Lost Mines of Phandelver had 14 player deaths.

Also a super long time fan of RPT and Johnn.

Favorite dice is the ones on Fantasy Grounds since they always roll crits.

Hey everyone. I'm here to take the adventure building course. I'm currently running the Demonplague, which I bought from John a few years back. Until I started running it, I had no idea that it would be the best and easiest adventure I'd ever run. That is the kind of adventure I want to write and the kind of adventure I want other DMs to enjoy and players to play. My previous adventures were enjoyable but were often hit or miss. I want a good process to hone it down so that it is a hit every single time and this will be my first lesson to try to do that. I've taken a few writing courses and have a few writing books and those help me craft a good story, but writing and performing an adventure has more to it than just the prose. I see this course as the skeleton of games running with my own performance and embellishment and on-the-fly creativity as the meat.

Good seeing you all and I'm buckling down now, cuz I'm sure it'll be a wild ride.

@Leadaddict I've always been curious about this:
I screen share for images and live mapping. I actually use photoshop for my in game mapping software. Its so powerful. I can use grid/no grid mapping. Fog layers, lighting, and any tokens I want to drop in. Plus drawing right on top.
So do you have tokens for the players, as well? And do the players tell you where they go and you move the tokens for them?

I've always been worried this approach would slow me down.

Player: I move to the door.

GM: Which door?

Player: The left one.

Player 2: I move to beside the fountain and ready with my bow.

GM: Which side of the fountain, or does it matter?

Player 2: Top side.

GM: <moves token> There?

Player 2: Down a little.

GM: There?

Player 2: To the left one spot.

GM: There?

etc.

I'm Michael from Portland, Oregon.

Someone prodded me into DM'ing D&D early last year and I loved it, just totally fell in love. I'm transitioning from being a board game/video game fanatic and I've really struggled with figuring out the right strategies for bringing out the stories in games vs. the video/board-game style combat/movement.

I wanted more practice DM'ing than I could get with my friends, so I started DM'ing weekly for Adventurer's League at my local game store for most of last year, which led to 2 paying gigs as a DM – which wasn't/isn't my goal. Paid gigs were a blast btw, although there's no realistic way to pay for the amount of time/energy/props/enthusiasm that are involved.

Since early last year, in addition to 5E I've run or attempted to run The One Ring, Fiasco, Tank Girl, Dungeon World, and Monster of the Week.

I'm currently running weekly games of D&D's Curse of Strahd for a handful of friends for the past 12 weeks and am in a 2nd week of Blades in the Dark.

I'd like to build an epic campaign based on the stories from Buffy the Vampire Slayer seasons 1-3. My favorite dice are the magical looking One Ring dice that have the sides with Gandalf Runes and the Eye of Sauron.

Hello everyone! My name is Jim. I've been GM'ing for nearly 40 years now, from D&D Basic through 5E, as well as every iteration of Star Wars RPG, Palladium, RIFTS to the WoD system. If there is an RPG out there, I want to try it. Additionally, starting my foray into Warhammer 40K miniatures gaming. I am also a retired, disabled veteran. Very much looking forward to this venture as I want to write (possibly publish) epic RPG sagas. I would be a 4 sided die, as not only can I be used to generate results but additionally, I can be used as a caltrop against non-creative players. I kid. I kid. (No, not really, but I should present the nice Jim, to begin with until you all are used to my twisted sense of humor.)

Hello, I'm Ellen, though I prefer pseudonyms online. I'm from Britain. Figured I'd give GMing a try last year and have been slowly working at it for about a year now. The only system I've GMed so far is Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition, though I have considered trying Ryuutama.

I'd always planned to move from using the starter kit to try out GMing into full-on homebrew, since coming up with ideas for places and stuff to do is so much fun, (maybe one day I'll run the blue dragon prom night idea XD) but prep's gotten pretty difficult. The hope of making the prep process more manageable and less stressful is notable reason for signing up to the course.

...I'd guess my sparkly, purple d20 I got for my birthday is my favourite? I took it with me when I went out for birthday lunch and I enjoy rolling them around in my hands. It has been both cruel and generous in online games, so it feels fair enough, heh.

Looking forward to bouncing ideas with y'all, if a touch anxious, heh. ^^

Hello!

My name is Paul. I GM for the extinct Mayfair's DC Heroes RPG on Discord.

I also like D&D, FASA Star Trek, FATE, and Cubicle 7 Doctor Who. I have created characters forever, hardly ever played, and GMed for about a year. I'm more into the role-play part than combat, but I recognize it has its place.

I also play DiceMasters, but that's not an RPG...

My favorite die is the d20.

I look forward to having fun and learning a ton!

Hey everyone!

I'm Michael from San Antonio, Texas. I've never played D&D, but I bought the starter set in March to see if my kids would like it during COVID (four of them, ages 8 to 15). I'm a pretty avid board gamer, and am usually the one who reads the rules and explains a game to newcomers, so I'm the DM. It's been fun, and I've added a few homebrew side quests to Lost Mine of Phandelver. I love D&D now, and I think it will be something my kids remember playing with me when they get old. :)

I also like playing Gloomhaven, Settlers of Catan, Puerto Rico, Dominion, Through the Ages, and other board games with lots of pieces.

My favorite die is the d4, but only if the number rolled is up top. (Some versions have the number rolled on the base of the triangle side.)

Hello! My name is Geoffrey, and I am from Virginia. I have been running a campaign for a few years, using D&D 3.5 and based on the Forgotten Reams setting, only with low-magic and trying for more gritty realism rather than high fantasy. We are an older group, 40s through 60s, and like the role-playing aspects of exploring what the characters would do more than running through pre-published campaigns. For this reason, I think the adventure building workshop will be a big help for me in improving the campaign!

We took a few years off, but started up again earlier this year with a new story arc. I am looking forward to trying to make it the best one yet.

Hello! I'm Mark, going by MarkD because Mark is a common name.

> Where in the world are you?

Western Pennsylvania in the States

> What game(s) do you GM?

5e with a group from work. Outside of an extended detour through _Reptile God_, we're hoping to be more one-shotty. I've got Call of Cthulhu and want to run it. Picked up Burning Wheel after seeing a cool stream, but it's looking a bit much for me right now. And I doubt I can get any players for either of them from my pool at work. WAY back in the mists of time (Moldvay edition) I ran games for my middle school friends. I don't remember much of those times outside of having done it.

> How long have you been GMing?

As a sentient adult, only about five months, since C-19 knocked out my evening activities. I run one game, play in two, and lurk in another one. Most meet every other week. It's all been virtual - usually Roll20 for the mapping (and I roll my dice there since I like to roll publicly), and Zoom for human interaction.

> What's your favourite sided-die?

12. Dodecahedron is a tremendously cool word. Plus the faces are pentagons.

Hi there! My handle is Mindle (aka Sara), and I haven't GM'd since the early to mid-90s, though I've played since the early 80s and still play today (currently an Eberron 5E run by my brother-in-law). The problem is when I was running games (in the old Marvel Super Hero game, which we mutated a lot because the entire group had a drama background so it became more improv theater than actual gaming!), that I a) tended to railroad a lot and b) my villains usually got talked out of their villainy (or did stupid things to avoid it), so I stopped.

But I'm married now to a guy that is a huge gamer (like a lot of you, he has been playing since the late 70s). And we're planning on retiring to full-time RV living, so we won't be near any gaming buddies for a while when we actually get going. In the meantime, he's also challenged me to run a game so that he can play with just the two of us. I've got something close to being ready that I'm pretty excited about (Savage Worlds system taking place in 1938 France along the Maginot Line), but I'm also extremely nervous because I don't want to do like I was doing before. I've been trying to learn what I can from watching other GMs, and one of them recommended I check out your 5-Room system, Johhn, which is how I got here after reading all the emails for months.

So I'm really, really hoping I can learn from you guys to make it a fun experience for both of us and keep doing it in the future!

As for my favorite-sided die, I think I've always been partial to 8s. For some reason, they just seem to make the most sense to me!

Oh yeah, and I'm in the Denver, Colorado area!

Hello !
I am Anthony from France ^^
i have been playing since the age of 16, but because of my jobs, i was not able to play all the time :'(
i am GMing Fate (With a warhammer 40k hack), PBTA like (dungeon word, and so on), plenty of games (just to try), and now i am Gming a French game, that i think has not been traduice "MEGA". its' a game about a guild of guy who had some spychic power ("like Jedi") in a universe like Warhammer 40K (for the aspect of human kind that spead into the universe and meet some aliens) this guy's are the only one to be able to travel throuht piramidal gates (like in stargate SG1), so they could appear in another world in the universe by another piramidal gate. they could also travel into a parralel universe, so the ideas of stories are quite endless.
my preferate dice is the d10 and i love the d6 too :p
i have so many stories in my mind, but i was not able to transform them into stories for my players, so i hope that Johnn could help me by his adventure building offer :p

see you !

Hi folks! I'm Brandon from Waterloo, Ontario in Canada. I'm originally from Vancouver Island in British Columbia and my whole family (along with my wife's whole family) are still over there, so part of my interest in TTRPGs is creating long-lasting friendships and keeping in touch with folks back on the west coast (so I was already on the virtual TTRPG bandwagon before all of the current nonsense started).

I played Warhammer 40k and D&D 3.5 back in middle & high school and then had a long run where I didn't play any TTRPGs. Rediscovered them as part of a local gaming group which I am now helping to organize/run/host and I am DMing two biweekly 5e campaigns, playing in two others as well as a biweekly PbtA: Apocalypse World game, and playing/running other one-shot style games as my time allows as part of the community group.

My favourite type of die is probably the classic d6 as I've got so many wonderful memories with them, from 40k and board games through to dumping a whole pile of them on the table in 5e for some spells. Just so satisfying!

Looking forward to seeing how this community can help grow an international group of DMs/GMs into campaign and adventure building machines!

Hi there! I'm Jan, i live near Stuttgart in Germany. I started GM'ing couple of months ago and have five full sessions under my belt :D We are playing SW5e with a "story" i've written/improvised. Due to Covid we still play Online with Roll20 and Discord although most of us live in the same city.
Besides RPGs i love boardgames and i am a bit addicted to Kickstarter 🙈

Really excited about the Master Class!

Hello Folks!
My name is Dave Buswell-Wible and I have been playing and GMing since 1982. This makes me both old and intimidated by the internets. But I have sallied forth to attempt to join this community. Hoping to put my theories of adventure design to the test and learn from all of you as well. I am in New Hampshire in the United States. I play all kinds of games, Fate, D&D, Runequest, HeroQuest, and anything I can find. My favorite die is the D20, because it it the most chaotic (and who can forget their first critical hit?!).
I can’t wait to dive in. Assuming I can figure out how to do it!

Hi Everyone,

My handle is Gatestone. I will also answer to Cliff ;). I started off with the original Red Box Basic Set with the Erol Otus Art at 8. Didn't really get anyone to play until 1980 I have mostly GM'd since then because I had a number of early bad experiences with other GM's and the playing style they fostered. Not a lot of RP, but a lot of Rules Lawyering and meta-gaming.

So I have endeavored to improve my craft over the years without a lot of Peer input. My players always tell me they are having a good time. Thus, I must be doing something right, but I do A LOT of improv and it gets tiring. Good Ideas, but not a lot of structure. I GM 80's Marvel Super Heroes, D&D 5e now, and I am working on DC Adventures based on the Mutants and Masterminds 3rd edition.

I'm here to find tools and some regimented discipline on how to organize and focus and even get some Peer input. Glad to see I'm not alone. Oh, since it's a thing, I particularly like d%. Nothing greater to me than seeing the ol' double aught tell you 100!

Julian here in the UK

I've been DM'ing / GM'ing / Storyguiding / Refereeing for 37 years

These days I mainly run Pathfinder (1st edition). Have run all sorts of editions of D&D previously, a lot of Ars Magica, Shadowrun, some Spirit of the Century. Also run many live roleplay adventures for Labyrinthe at Chiselhurst Caves in Kent (yep, actually able to run dungeons in the cave network).

With Covid I'm suddenly running and playing a ton of online stuff in Roll20 - looking to up my game as a referee keep things fresh. Johnn's comment about how in a sandbox game the players would always move to the area of least preparation is proving painfully true in one case.

My favourite die is the under-loved D12.
