List of Digital GM Tools

Johnn, cool to see that you're using Scrivener to manage campaigns, I've been doing the same for the past few years, but....waiting for version 3 on Windows is. killing. me.

Recently I learned about https://notion.so and have delved deep into it. The only drawback that I can find is there's no offline version. The ability to crosslink, and create related databases on the fly is a dream. Want to create a small database of foods and where they come from, then add random notes about which characters have eaten which? A few keystrokes and you're in business.

A friend of mine looked at it and thought it was too complex, so your mileage may vary.

I just discovered Notion too, thanks to a tip by Sly Flourish. At first I thought it was too complex too, but if you start with one of Sly's free templates it's pretty easy to learn, and very powerful. I had been using Evernote for most of my D&D notes and tracking, but I'm getting ready to kick it to the curb and switch to Notion.

there is an app that tries to collect all your webbased tools into one window, its called station can be found at https://stationhq.com/ . So gather your google apps, notion, mail, and alot of other webbased tools.
stuff like:
notion.so
Google docs
gmail
slack
discord
youtube
reddit
pinterest
google calendar
google translate
twitter
hangouts
facebook
facebook messenger
etc etc etc they support quite alot
Though i have added maybe 40+ coz im curious, it does take up about 2,5gb ram according to taskmanager.

Besides the two xxDRAFT apps i have also purchased Worldographer which is a hexmap app. It can generate a new world for you in an instant, you can build from blank, you can edit the auto-generated. You can create on 4 different worldview levels -world,continet,kingdom,province all related to each other as parent-child. So a hex from kingdom level, will get populated by smaller hexes when you switch to province level. So if you start with 24miles hexes at continent lvl, zoom in on kingdom level and set it to 6 hexes across you get 4mile hexes within the 24mile hex.

Worldographer also generates nations, religions, cultures and languages automatically.

You can also get it to generate resources pr hex 1615541747235.png though it only shows on hover with mouse, i dont know if this can be exported.

It also has:
fog of war,
GM only on location, terrain type, selected terrain.
I attached a randomworld, which it has autopopulated with nations/empires, cities, borders etc.. i have only edited the nation borders, i enlarged the width of the lineshape to 10, in this map -> randomworld1.png this is literrally less than 10 buttons :D You can add notes to features (city icons and the like).

The death throes can now cease:
Scrivener 3 is a major update to Scrivener that is now available on Windows. It is a paid upgrade for existing users (the first paid update in nearly ten years), but free for anyone who purchesed Scrivener 1 after 20th November 2017. Including a whole heap of exciting enhancements and a beautiful interface refresh, it has been years in the making and we are incredibly excited to get it out there at last.

the station app is no longer a standalone app (that is now unsupported), they have pivoted to browser extension.

i wanted to show another example of worldographer, one of the things i like is the "zoom" factor.
Here is "world view" and "Continent view" of an island.
You are asked how many hexes across the child view should have pr parent hex, this set to 6 hexes in a world hex.

You might notice there is a city icon on the "continent view" and it's not showing up on "world view", that is something you can control on each feature icon.

for me, having this option of granularity with the terrain helps with distances and travel time, which have often before been guestimates "approximately 3 days" because honestly i never knew :D

This looks definitely interesting! A shaking ship on water?? OMG. This is next level. I'm not using a VTT for several reasons, but I would be interested to experience it once as a player.

Well, you do happen to know someone who is running games professionally on that very medium. ;-) There are a number of Series coming together, and there's always an option to pull together some folks for a single Episode just to try it out.

(Do please forgive if it seems I am "pimping" a bit, but this is my new career and it's literally how I am paying my bills now. ;-) )

Since John mentioned it in one of the adventure building master game plan lessons, I found a nice tool for creating timelines which became an integral part of my adenture planning (and world building):
http://thetimelineproj.sourceforge.net/

It is written in Python and should work on all platforms although they only have instructions for Windows and some Linux distribution.

I use it to keep track of the events in my West-marches-campaign. So far it wouldn't have been neccessary, but I think in the future as more and more connection between events appear this might help.

Unfortunately you can only use a limited set of calendars and creating my own (which requires editing the Python code) did not work out after half an hour so I decided that the present options suffice. For players of Das Schwarze Auge (The dark eye - very popular in Germany) they have included the Bosparanian calendar.
