Poison Damage vs Poison Condition

I played BECMI, 1e and 2adnd.
I skipped 3, 3.5 and 4 because life.
I got back into 5 and one of the many things I still dont get yet is the whole Poison Damage vs Poison Condition.

It seems like you can get poison damage without getting poisoned condtition. I get that some monsters do poisoned damage, others can apply to the player the poisoned condition if they fail their save.

How many poison attacks can you take before you are posioned? I read up on the poisoned condition in the PHB and the section on poisons in the DMG.

I am afraid its no clearer for me.

Poisons can cause damage and/or afflict the Poisoned condition upon a character (sometimes depending on the result of a saving throw).

Damage and Condition don't depend on each other.
IMO, Poisoned could have been called Sickened equally well.
You just feel ill while the poison is affecting you - damage being a more immediate effect, condition a more lasting one (generally).

There's poison that has its way with you, and then if you're not dead, it's done with you.

And then there's poison that doesn't kill you right away but impairs you for a time after.
