I've DM'd one or two Fantasy AGE games - which is just D&D with d6s really. I'm playing in a Star Wars game at the moment and thinking of trying Genesys system for my next fantasy RPG.

Genesis is great. The rules let you play it straight crunchy or do narrative things. I wish more people got into it.

I have to admit after a couple of more games of SW, I‘m sold! I’m going to run a short adventure in a homebrew setting in Genesys until our regular GM is back.

My first was Traveller (rpg)

Characters get their skills and experience in a mini-game, where the player makes career choices that determine the character's life right up to the point before adventuring begins. Funny thing...you could actually be killed during character creation!! But it is a fun game.

Description
Traveller is a science-fiction role-playing game, first published in 1977 by Game Designers' Workshop. Marc W. Miller designed Traveller with help from Frank Chadwick, John Harshman, and Loren K. Wiseman.

While Traveller was not my first, or even first sci-fi RPG - it has been a lifelong passion since I picked up Traveller: 2300 (later became 2300AD).
Once I saw the 2300 setup - I had to get the rest and the rest is history.

My favorite Travellers in order:
T:2300 (before the focus on Kafer war)
Cepheus Engine (built from OGL Mongoose Traveller 1)
Classic Traveller in the form of The Traveller Book (if you could only have 1 Traveller book, that 1 book is all you need)

But, every version of Traveller brought something new and useful so you really can't go wrong with any version of Traveller.

And the ability to die during character generation had a very important side effect:
It got players rolling up NPCs for the guide as a crowdsource effort...

Although I've only ever GMed various editions of D&D, I am currently reading and hoping to GM a Spire campaign sometime this year. The setting really appeals to me. We'll see if I can A) convince some people to play with me and B) set aside the many D&D games I also have in mind to run to try something new!

Please tell us how you found it. I'm intrigued, but not convinced to pay so much for this.

I think I first learned about it in an article about interesting RPGs that popped up in my newsfeed. Spire did intrigue me enough to take a chance and buy the core book as a PDF - I figured at the very least I could steal some ideas and inspiration for my D&D campaigns. It turned out to be better than I expected - really beautiful art, great writing, an interesting and simple mechanical system, and a setting full of the kinds of lore and factions that really appeal to me.

On further research I've learned that the crew of people at Rowan, Rook, and Decard are super creative and responsible for making a lot more fascinating stuff.

Hope that's helpful!

While trying to get an overview about the system, I stumbled upon a Spire Game Review which I want to share with you. Although it seems interesting on first glance, the d10 system and that NPCs only represent modifiers and stress is a general term for all kind of things is rather not my thing. Too much abstraction and a definite move from setting to system based on the system itself. At least that is my impression.
Apart from an interesting setting and an intriguing character creation process, what do you think about the system? Have you ever played it?

Yes, I agree completely with your concerns. I have not played it yet, only read the book. The system itself is pretty far outside my experience (being mostly limited to d&d) so I have no way of really guessing how I'll like it. Only one way to find out! 😊 I'm definitely up for trying something new, and the setting is rich and exciting to me, so hopes are high.

I like testing new stuff myself very much (explorer-type after all). If you need another player (with German dialect), ping me up. Else, please post how it went.
