Hi fellow GMs,

in my last session i decided to use accents for a couple of NPCs, because i can do pretty much every German accent and my players thought it will be with. Even though you don't have Star Wars characters with a bavarian or swabian accent :D
Sadly, voices are not my strong suit, i definitly need to work an that.

So i made a little poll because i'm curious what you guys/gals are up to in your sessions ;)

It's more likely for me to use specific odd words for a certain NPC than an accent that I can't document and can't be sure to do exactly the same way next time. That being said, some more important NPCs might get better treatment with accents.

I acknowledge the value on doing those, but I am just terrible at them unless I put a lot of effort on prepping before hand & really focusing at the table... so I very rarely do any of it...

I believe that accents (as many other things) can be used as shortcuts to save some time describing certain things. For example, when I want an npc to be a noble person, I'd switch to something like the posh upper class English of the royals. Immediately players will interpolate a lot based on this. (can also be used to misguide players if need be)

Based on the critical role dwarfs speaking Scottish, I decided it would also just fit perfectly for my tde dwarfs to speak the heaviest southern Bavarian I can find. Rough people, used to harsh environments in the mountains, grumpy and very conservative, slight tendency to alcohol abuse and fighting... Players loved it and two started playing this kind of dwarf later on.

On the other hand, it can also be a comic relief if used in moderation. I had a half-giant in one of my campaigns that I loosely based on a basketball player from suabia I knew. Monster of a man, but gentle as a can be and "afraid" of his wife. "Guys, I know the bad guys are coming, but my wife will be angry if I am not back for dinner on time!" this, mixed with the goofy suabian accent made the character just incredibly lovable
