Logs too short.. maybe i'm using them wrong?

I keep running into the same issue and maybe i'm not using the logs correctly yet.

I keep a log for each session and put information in each log about the current session as it happens.

AFter I then create a new log with a recap of the last sessoin, the start of the new session and notes about anything I might need to start the session.

I am finding I run out of room in the log to type. 400 words roughly is all I can get in.

Seems maybe I should use a page and label them recaps to keep the information I need in there which I realize have far larger notepads for words to be stored. then use the link in the log to point me towards the information. Yet still the log feels like i'm not quite using it correctly yet.

Anyone able to give me an idea of how the log ideally is meant to be used?

I use one log per group, there I add one entry per scene/encounter. So, one session will encompass several entries and one log contains all sessions of a group.

@Justin_Giver Great question! Thank you.

I'm currently taking a 3-pronged approach that's fast yet detailed.

Here's a video walkthrough of my current approach:

AHHHHH ok. So by having each log with a header that you have predetermined you can group them or sort them to find info. That way you keep the log short and quick. but, all together linked with the tag you gave it. I like that idea. Then you can keep track of the rounds, or log the health of pc at the end of a session etc. but, not take up alot of words mucking up the log. I may create a page for some story elements as my players really like the story like recap at the beginning of each session as s reminder of what happened and the details can be cumbersome but, takes less than 5 minutes to put them back in "the mood".

I think I get and understand. Thank you.

I call this The Story So Far page. It's my history plus session shenanigans summarized kind of like a soap opera tale. I read this whenever I want to get into the mood, or just before a session to load campaign details into my mental RAM.

I'm piecing this together now that work is done. Logs.. short quick spurts of info, not organized aside from each log having a suffix for the session.

then I have created a new page for Sessions. Session x, will contain the info I want included for that session. it will reference my encounter pages, my cast of character pages etc, but, will also reference, session x -1 which will contain the log entries, cleaned up in a better more readable form.

The Story so far will then be each recap in order and be a page to itself under the same squigly page as the sessions.

I'm getting there and making changes as I go to ensure less change needed and far more work down the line.

I think this makes sense and I have some notes for myself within my pages to help me remember. Basically a page describing what that symbol means, what should be included and how it works in the grand scheme. i'm also keeping a log for how i'm building all this out, changes being made so I can maybe help others later on.

AS always. Thank you for the input.

Perfect!

A lot depends on your needs and style. I would not do this for a one-shot or single adventure, for example.

But for ongoing campaigns, especially where you want the world to be dynamic and respond to party actions or you tend to improvise new details during sessions, I'm finding this approach works very well.

For me from time to time, the parser seems to behave inconsistently, too, when using bullet lists with ordered lists, or when I want to add an indented second line after a bullet point.

Normally, I get to work around issues by adding or removing spaces at the beginning of a line until the output looks right.

I don't know if the asterisk as bullet point behaves differently from the dash notation. I'm only using dashes.

Edit: this post was intended for another thread (https://campaign-community.com/index.php?posts/24030/)
I don't know how it ended up here. Sorry for being off topic or seeming unrelated. The downside of mobile navigation I suppose. 😅
