I really like articles like this which speak to the "illusionist" side of being a GM.

We're not computers simulating reality to the Nth degree for the benefit of the game.

I've always felt we're more "magicians" directing the audiences' gaze where we want it while the other hand is doing something tricky out of sight.

Setting the tone and theme, and providing a light touch of realistic detail (props) to support those can give people enough of a hook to willingly suspend disbelief and "be there now" for a bit.

With a few bits of sleight of hand, we can tap into the common wells of shared information and greatly improve the impression and immersion of a virtual world, without getting into all the grindy detail.

This. Well said. I hadn't thought of it that way before.

I would add that good players become the magician's assistants.
