I want to do a "Scavenger Hunt"-style adventure (I hope it's the correct term...) - do you have any suggestions for resources to mine?

What a fun idea!

It made me think of the American TV show "The Amazing Race". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Amazing_Race_(American_TV_series) . ~400 episodes of teams competing in all sorts of scavenger hunt challenges. Here's a list of the silliest ones: https://screenrant.com/the-amazing-race-the-10-weirdest-challenges-ever/

What about Geo Caching? https://www.geocaching.com/play . It's not exactly a scavenger hunt but it could be fun to have a tricky gnome leave a trail of geo-cached clues to attract worthy apprentice recruits. Similar to the way some IT companies recruit coders by post interesting algorithm problems on bulletin boards with a message saying "Text your solution to us and if we like it will call you for a job interview."

@JochenL - I started playing around with ChatGPT last night. I think this is going to be a huge game changer for the TTRPG community.

Check out his conversation I had...

Me
I'm creating a pirate themed dungeons and dragons campaign.

ChatGPT
Pirates are a popular theme for Dungeons and Dragons campaigns, as they provide a unique blend of swashbuckling adventure and naval combat. When creating a pirate-themed campaign, there are a few key elements to consider.

First, you'll want to decide on the setting and setting. Will your campaign take place in a specific region or on a particular sea, such as the Caribbean or the high seas of the southern oceans? This will help determine the types of creatures and enemies your players will encounter, as well as the available resources and locales they can explore.

Next, consider the culture and politics of the pirates in your campaign. Are they members of a particular pirate faction or nation, such as the notorious Brethren of the Coast? Do they have a code of conduct or set of laws that govern their behavior? How do they interact with the local authorities and other factions, such as merchant ships or naval vessels?

Finally, think about the types of adventures and quests your players will embark on. Will they focus on plundering treasure from merchant ships and hidden islands, or will they have more complex goals, such as overthrowing a corrupt governor or hunting down a legendary sea monster? Whatever direction you choose, be sure to provide plenty of exciting challenges and opportunities for your players to test their mettle and prove their worth as pirates.

Me
Create a nefarious, but loveable, villain that is intent on low-level grifts that I can use in this campaign.

ChatGPT
Meet "Sly" Suzie, the loveable rogue who always seems to have her hands in everyone's pockets. A former street urchin, Suzie learned early on that it was easier to take what she wanted than to ask for it. Over the years, she honed her skills as a pickpocket and con artist, becoming one of the most successful grifters in the city.

Despite her criminal tendencies, Suzie has a soft spot for the downtrodden and often uses her ill-gotten gains to help those in need. She has a quick wit and a sharp tongue, and is never afraid to speak her mind. But beware, cross her and you'll regret it - Suzie always has a trick up her sleeve and isn't afraid to use it.

Suzie is a master of disguise and can blend into any crowd, making her the perfect candidate for heists and other sneaky operations. She is driven by a desire for wealth and power, but also has a strong sense of loyalty to her friends and allies. She may be a villain, but deep down she has a good heart and will do whatever it takes to protect those she cares about.

WOW!!!! I was absolutely gobsmacked!

I thought I'd give your scavenger-hunt idea a shot.

Me
Create a scavenger hunt style quest for this campaign.

ChatGPT
Here is a potential scavenger hunt quest for your campaign:

The players are approached by a wealthy merchant who is in need of their help. He has recently acquired a rare and valuable map, but it has been torn into several pieces and scattered across the city. The merchant offers a generous reward to whoever can retrieve all of the pieces and assemble the map.

The players must navigate the city and its various districts, gathering clues and solving puzzles to locate the missing map pieces. Along the way, they will encounter a variety of challenges and obstacles, such as locked doors, guards, and rival scavengers who are also searching for the map.

The map pieces may be hidden in a variety of locations, such as in the possession of a local fence, inside a locked chest in a guarded warehouse, or even in the hands of a powerful crime boss. The players will need to use their skills, ingenuity, and teamwork to overcome these challenges and collect all of the map pieces.

Once the players have found all of the pieces, they must use the map to locate the hidden treasure it reveals - a legendary hoard of ancient artifacts and riches. But be warned, the treasure is guarded by powerful traps and monsters, and the players will need to use all of their cunning and strength to claim their reward.
