Easy Mapping
How to Create a Simple Map for your Sandbox Game – Fast and Easy

I created this resource as part of my West Marches-style Game to get me started without losing time in details and/or learning a new mapping software.

I want to expand on it in the future to gradually get from a rough word-based map to a detailed and graphically pleasing map.

You can read my "musings" on starting such a game on RPT.com: https://www.roleplayingtips.com/adventure-building-campaigns/starting-a-west-marches-campaign-step-by-step/

This is a great article on how to build a West Marches style campaign. Good job, Jochen.
A great quick-start! Everyone might want to change something for their opinion of how - but its great to see an initial "just use these numbers" and why. Reminds me a bit of rolling up a subsector in Traveller - and maybe a similar methodology could be used here. Also, remember that trade roads follow waterways and military roads cross them at right angles for fording. When those intersect, you get towns with ferries, support services which build up from supporting camps as large groups stage and cross rivers or lakes.
